Master of European Studies: Transnational and Global Perspectives
with specialisation in Transnational Perspectives
EU, Globalization and Governance

The Centre for European Studies is a part of K.U. Leuven and was founded in 1988 with the intention of providing international students with an unforgettable study abroad experience in the immediate vicinity of the headquarters of the European Union. The Master in European Studies is an interdisciplinary study programme that deepens your knowledge of what Europe was, is and is becoming in the 21st century. The programme introduces you to the study of Europe as a continent of strong interactions across national boundaries and of constant exchange with the outside world. It provides you with tools to adequately analyze Europe as an actor in the formation of the modern and contemporary world.

The focus of the programme is a multidimensional analysis of the political, cultural, economic and judicial aspects that shape the current position of Europe as a region of internal and global interactions. In today’s era of globalisation the position of Europe constantly changes. Europe is deeply involved in globalisation processes. And our programme puts this into perspective.

The Master in European Studies enables you as a bachelor or master student in humanities to get a thorough one-year education and training in interdisciplinary thinking with respect to a broad range of European issues and interests. In line with the 20 year old tradition of the Centre for European Studies at K.U. Leuven your study (abroad) experience will be supplemented with classroom activities and social events that stimulate a sense of Europeaness among students.

With this programme K.U.Leuven aims to develop fresh perspectives on the history, the present and the future of Europe. Drawing upon a history of many centuries of academic and intellectual exchange in the heart of Europe and a location in a core of decision-making and institutionalization of the European Union, the Centre for European Studies explores two avenues: transnational exchange and globalisation.

The programme engages students to study Europe as a transnational community in constant interaction with other world regions. It does this by organizing courses in which in-depth knowledge about the functioning of Europe both in the contemporary world and in a historical perspective is constructed. With respect to the issues that are studied students are stimulated to cross disciplinary boundaries and assimilate fresh perspectives. The programme emphasizes strongly the need to engage in critical debate about the options and alternatives that have confronted, confront and will confront Europe in its dealings with other world’s regions and with respect to its internal, diversified identities.
